The Galesburg, Illinois, community is mourning the passing of Sandra S. (Peterson) Anderson, 83, a longtime resident whose life was defined by devotion to her family, a career in healthcare, faith, and meaningful connections within her community.
Sandra died at 8:53 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Seminary Manor in Galesburg, according to her published obituary. She leaves behind family members, friends, and loved ones who will remember her with affection.
Born on April 29, 1943, Sandra was adopted in 1945 and became the daughter of Marvyn and Laurene Peterson, and later her stepfather, Gerald Dickey. Her early childhood included time in an orphanage until she was two years old. Following her adoption, she lived with her parents in Bishop Hill before the family moved to Galva after her father’s death. She graduated from Galva High School in 1961.
Sandra continued her education at Cottage Nursing School, graduating in 1964. Her professional life was dedicated largely to healthcare. She began working at Cottage Hospital, where she remained until 1970, and later worked in several doctors’ offices, including those of Dr. Giles, Dr. Grieme, and Dr. Willander.
She eventually returned to Cottage Hospital, where she worked in chemical dependency and mental health. Following the hospital’s closure, Sandra continued working in offices within the Cottage Professional building before eventually joining the office of Dr. Carl Strauch. She retired in 2009 after decades of service.

She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church and remained connected to the Galesburg community throughout her life. In later years, Sandra and Bob were also known as regulars at Tres Café, where their familiar presence became part of their everyday lives.
Sandra is survived by her daughters, Shelly (Ray) Golden of Monmouth and Tami (Dennis C.) Prather of Victoria. Her surviving grandchildren include Brandon Anderson, Alyssa Golden Grant, Alexia Golden Noens, Dennis R. Prather, Karissa Vozovoi, and Kelsey Stone. She also leaves eight great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Jean Grupe, and special family friend Kraig Boynton.
Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory in Galesburg. Graveside services will follow at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 25, at Bishop Hill Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the Thomas Legacy Center.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Bishop Hill Heritage Association or the Carl Sandburg College Foundation-Nursing Success Grant.
At 83, Sandra leaves behind a life spanning more than eight decades, marked by family, faith, healthcare service, and enduring community relationships. Her memory will continue through the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, and others whose lives she touched.
